Type 2 Diabetes affects more than 36 million Americans, and it is primarily caused by diet and lifestyle differences. Individuals who are physically active less than 3 times a week or genetically predisposed to Diabetes are more likely to develop the disease.
Additionally, African American, Hispanic or Latino, American Indian, and Alaska Native people are at a higher risk for developing Type 2 Diabetes.
So how can we prevent Type 2 Diabetes?
Losing weight (if you are overweight or otherwise unhealthy) can help reduce the stress on your body, but it is typically a good rule of thumb to exercise for at least 2 hours this week- and that doesn’t have to mean going to the gym! Walking, lifting weights, playing sports, and engaging in other physical activity can all help you stay healthy.
Additionally, making informed dietary choices is extremely important. Prioritizing fiber and avoiding high-sugar and high-sodium foods is important, as is maintaining a balanced diet! (P.S: This website has many recipes that are low-cost and very nutritious you can follow for a healthy diet!)
Diabetes is an expensive disease to maintain, but Type 2 Diabetes is preventable. Please, follow this advice and stay healthy!
